Sandy Pond – Ayer Town Beach

Sandy Pond – Ayer Town Beach Image

Sandy Pond is one of Ayer's most valued and beloved natural resources and heritage assets; whether swimming, fishing, boating, birding, dipping, sun-bathing, recreating, or just meeting friends and families for a beautiful summer day on the shore, Sandy Pond is Ayer at its best. And CPC funds have improved our beach experience and helped it become a place for all Ayer residents.

Sandy Pond was once a place of active industry – the ice business. Then in the late 19th century, affluent Bostonians had their summer cabins at here. Ayer's Sandy Pond was a vacation retreat place, much like the lake & mountain regions of New Hampshire & Maine today. As time went on, Ayer residents realized there should be a place at Sandy Pond that the people could call ‘their own.’ Thus, in 1945 at Town Meeting it was voted unanimously. The Beach at Sandy Pond was realized! And we have been enjoying it ever since!

In 2002, CPC utilized its Recreating Funding to update and enhance Sandy Pond Beach.  This funding, $188,000, created ADA compliant recreational facilities at the Sandy Pond Beach, a dock area, walkways, special parking for people with disabilities, and improved safety at the intersection of Sandy Pond Road and Snake Hill Road.

That is something we can all be grateful for as we enjoy another summer on Sandy Pond!
