Pickleball!

The Ayer Parks Department is happy to announce that pickleball has come to Ayer!  For those not familiar with it, it is an activity that combines elements of several racket sports. Two or four players use solid paddles to hit a perforated hollow plastic ball back and forth over a net. A pickleball court is similar to badminton, with a net similar to tennis, and the paddles are similar to those in table tennis.  Pickleball Rules.

There are currently two courts now available at the ASRHS tennis courts, and these are open to the public.  Those wishing to use the courts can do so several ways:

  • If you have a pickleball net, you can bring it to the court and set it up and play just as anyone currently using the courts for tennis does.  Please exercise the same courtesies and etiquette regarding use of court space and sharing with those waiting to play that is common in most public tennis courts.
  • You can come on Saturdays from 8:00-12:00 or Tuesdays from 4:00-7:00 to use courts that will be set up by the Parks Department.  If there are multiple groups wanting to use the two courts, please rotate with them after completion of a game.
  • You can contact the Ayer Parks Department and complete a form to join the Ayer Pickleball Group and obtain a combination to a locker that has pickleball nets and equipment stored in it. Members can then access the nets and set them up on their own, which can be done in about five minutes.  Membership will be made available and offered at no charge to Ayer residents.  A new combination will be sent out to members every several weeks.

If you have any questions, please contact the Ayer Parks Department at parks@ayer.ma.us.  Thank you, and we’ll see you on the court!
