The Ayer Board of Selectmen meeting on December 5, 2017 kicked off with the appointment of two Patrol Officers and a Per Diem Dispatcher to the Ayer Police Department. Crystal Land, a Milford resident, and Christopher Rogers, a Worcester resident, attended the meeting and were approved to begin the ten-week training procedure required to be appointed as patrol officers. Colleen Sheedy, a Lowell resident, was unable to attend, but will also be receiving training for her appointment as a Per Diem Dispatcher. Their appointments will become effective December 19, 2017, and Chairman Christopher Hillman welcomed them to Ayer, saying that he is “looking forward to seeing [them] around town.”

Chief William A. Murray of the Ayer Police Department also proposed a town-wide motion to officially declare a speed limit of 25 mph for any area without a posted sign.

Employees of Nasoya returned to provide updates on their action plans to improve the situation regarding the odor complaints surrounding their factory. As of November 24, 2017 Nasoya has already installed water softeners, removed and replaced scaled packing materials, and improved the capture on bio-tanks in order to balance and draw air from bio towers.

Nasoya has also settled on a new thermal oxidizer system for the factory, and is working closely with the DEP to prepare plans and permit restrictions. Once approval is received on these plans, a timeline will be drafted and the company will move to obtain construction approval from the Town of Ayer. The estimated construction period for the installation of this system is 22 weeks.

Additionally, the commuter rail access parking project was awarded a demo contract to begin preparing for the demolition of a building located at 9-11 Depot Square. The building is estimated to “come down before the holidays,” and will be a huge “sign of physical progress” for the Town of Ayer.
