Ice Safety

The Ayer Fire Department would like to remind everyone to be safe around our frozen bodies of water during this particularly warm winter. The ice on our ponds can vary in thickness due to many factors, including temperature and water currents. Ice on moving water, such as rivers, streams, and brooks should never be considered safe. Clear, blue ice on ponds should be at least four inches thick before anyone walks on it. Ice thickness should be checked every day by an adult. It is always safer to skate at a rink, where there's never a chance of falling through the ice.
