Assistant Town Clerk

The Town of Ayer is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Town Clerk.  The position is a fulltime (40 hours a week) position that works under the general supervision of the Town Clerk.  The Assistant Town Clerk performs administrative/clerical work to support the operations of the Town Clerk’s Office.  The position also deals with the general public frequently.  The Assistant Town Clerk performs administrative duties including, but not limited to the following:  vital records (birth, death, marriage), census, dog licensing, voter registration, town bylaws.  Performs similar or related duties as required.  For the official position job description please click here.  

Minimum Qualifications:  Associates Degree in business or related field; three years progressively responsible experience in secretarial, or administrative work; or any combination of education and experience. Candidate must have an understanding of Microsoft Word and Excel.  Candidate must be or have the ability to become a Massachusetts Notary Public within 90 days of appointment. 

Salary/Benefits:  Salary range per Town Hall Clerical Union Contract:  $21.28-$22.25 per hour.  Full time (40 hours a week; M, W, Th 8a-4p; Tu 8a-6p; F 8a-2p); Union position with benefits including vacation/personal/sick time; health insurance; retirement system; optional deferred compensation plan.

Water & Sewer Superintendent
Ayer Department of Public Works

The Town of Ayer, Massachusetts is seeking a self-motivated, highly qualified applicant for the new position of Water and Sewer Superintendent to report to the Director of Public Works. The Water & Sewer Superintendent plans, trains, directs and administers the technical, operational and maintenance work for the Town’s water and sewer systems. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, managing and scheduling 11 staff members, overseeing operations and capital budgets, capital project planning and oversight, MassDEP/EPA reporting, and providing excellent customer service.

The Ayer water and sewer systems include:

  • 3300 water and sewer customers including several large food service industries
  • 50 miles of water main and 38 miles of sewer pipe
  • 5 groundwater wells
  • 2 water treatment plants, for iron, manganese and PFAS removal
  • 2 water storage tanks
  • 19 wastewater pumping stations
  • 1.8 MGD tertiary wastewater treatment plant

The ideal candidate will hold the following qualifications:

  • 5 years of related experience in water systems and sanitary sewers, and related maintenance and construction work including 2 to 3 years of supervisory experience, or equivalent.
  • BS in Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field preferred.
  • Must possess a D2 and T2 Massachusetts Drinking Water Licenses.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.
  • Possession of a Wastewater Treatment 4M is desirable.
  • Possession of a Sewer Collection System Certification is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of computer software applications.
  • Available and able to respond to emergency calls on a 24 hour basis.
  • Experience with of public works related software, spreadsheets and word processing.
  •  Valid driver’s license.

Salary:

The full salary range for this position in Fiscal Year 2022 is $85,000 to $108,000 depending on qualifications.

Town Engineer
Ayer Department of Public Works

Town of Ayer, Massachusetts is seeking a self-motivated, highly qualified applicant for the position of Town Engineer. The Town Engineer will report to the Director of Public Works.  The Town Engineer will provide engineering and project management within the DPW, which has responsibility for over 41 miles of roads and associated water mains and sewers; two water treatment plants; 19 wastewater pumping stations and a 1.8 MGD tertiary wastewater treatment plant; a transfer station and two inactive landfills; a new stormwater utility; and consultation with other town departments, including subdivision and site plan review, construction monitoring, and street acceptance.  

A broad background in municipal engineering is required, covering the relevant skills to support the infrastructure summarized above.  The individual should have experience in roadway and drainage evaluation and design, water and wastewater utility assessment and improvements, solid waste management, stormwater management, and environmental permitting and regulatory compliance. Requires BS in civil engineering or related field plus 5 years of public or private sector engineering, project management and construction experience and EIT. PE Registration is preferred.  Strong computer skills are a necessity including  GIS, CAD, word processing and spreadsheet capabilities. Salary range is up to $75,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
