In accordance with Ayer’s Water Management Act Permit as governed by the State, the Town has implemented a mandatory water ban from May 1 through September 30th, with essential water use allowed between the hours of 9AM and 5PM. See the Website for details or contact the DPW Administrative Offices at (978) 772-8240.

Nonessential outdoor water uses include:

  • Irrigation of lawns via sprinklers or automatic irrigation systems;
  • Washing of vehicles, except in a commercial car wash or as necessary for operator safety; and
  • Washing of exterior building surfaces, parking lots, driveways or sidewalks, except as necessary to apply surface treatments such as paint, preservatives, stucco, pavement or cement.

The follow uses may be allowed during the watering ban:

  • Irrigation to establish a new lawn and new plantings during the months of May and September;
  • Irrigation of public parks and recreational fields by means of automatic sprinklers outside the hours of 9AM and 5PM; and
  • Irrigation of lawns, gardens, flowers, and ornamental plants by means of a hand-held hose.

Violation Schedule:

1st Violation – written warning;
2nd Violation – $100 fine;
3rd Violation – Service shall be shut off and only restored when previously issued fines are paid along with a $50 restoration fee.

Nonessential outdoor water use restrictions are necessary to ensure a sustainable drinking water supply and to protect natural resources and streamflow for aquatic life. Water Conservation Tips are available at the DPW Office and the Town Website.
