Highway Mechanic Job Description

Town of Ayer, Massachusetts is seeking a self-motivated, highly qualified applicant for the position of Mechanic for the Department of Public Works Highway Division. The Highway Division is responsible for maintaining and snow plowing approximately 50 miles of roads, mowing public areas and maintaining the stormwater systems.

The duties of this position include:

1. Maintain the fleet of Public Works Department trucks / vehicles (gas and diesel), heavy equipment and power equipment.
2. Maintain Highway Garage facility including facility maintenance, waste disposal and parts inventory.
3. Conduct inspections of vehicle and equipment condition. 
4. Repair and overhauls power equipment and tools.
5. Perform equipment and vehicle mechanical diagnosis and repair. Maintain record of work performed on computer. Run basic reports regarding pending preventative maintenance due, and repair history.
6. Perform other job related duties, including snow plowing, as assigned.

Candidate must have a High school education supplemented by one year of technical or vocational training as a mechanic; five (5) years’ experience as a mechanic performing gas, diesel and hydraulic repair work; or any equivalent combination of education and experience

Other requirements include CDL B, Massachusetts Hoisting License.

Rate of pay $26.19 to $30.57 per hour and license increments of up to $1.32 per hour.
