Ayer DPW Complete Streets Implementation

Complete StreetsA Complete Street is one that provides safe and accessible options for all travel modes - walking, biking, transit and vehicles – for people of all ages and abilities. Ayer approved a Complete Streets Policy in 2017 and is committed to implementing the program throughout the community. While MassDOT does provide some funding for construction of these projects, the Ayer DPW has designed and or completed numerous “complete streets” project throughout the Town.

  • Washington Street Sidewalks – This was completed using Chapter 90 funds and is the main pedestrian route to the elementary and high schools.
  • Central Ave Bike Lanes – Funded with Chapter 90.
  • East Main St Signalized Crosswalk – between Library and Court House – funded by DPW budget
  • Groton School Road Bike Lanes / Sharrows – Funded by DPW budget and National Grid.
  • Pleasant Street – Using a combination of CDBG grant and Chapter 90, we completed replacement of sidewalks with new ADA concrete sidewalls for 1300 feet of densely populated  neighborhood area. This serves the senior housing and connects to the commuter rail depot.
  • Pirone Park walking path – We constructed a 1/3 mile long walking path around the park at Pirone Park – at the end of School Street. This was funded with a combination of general fund Tax and CPA funds.
  • East Main St TIP – This project includes new ADA sidewalks and Bike Lanes from Harvard Road to Main St.
  • West Main St Bridge – This project is partially funded under the Small Bridge Program and includes new ADA sidewalks and bike lanes.
  • Prospect St and Oak St CDBG Grant – We are reconstruction these two streets with CDBG grant and Chapter 90 money. It includes new sidewalks and crosswalks.
  • Harvard Road sidewalk from Town Line to Markham Circle– the Town required a developer to complete this as part of their project. It will be constructed this summer.
  • The DPW is working with MassDOT to construct a sidewalk on Fitchburg Road from Park Street to Shop and Save and on Harvard Road from East Street to Barnum Road

So as you can see, Ayer is walking (and biking) the Complete Streets walk. We continue to apply for grants and partner with private development to improve the Town of Ayer.
