Public Notification:  Confirmed COVID-19 Related Death in Ayer

March 22, 2020

The Town of Ayer has received confirmation from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health that an Ayer resident is the second person in Massachusetts to die from COVID-19 related illness.  It has been reported by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health that the individual did have a pre-existing condition predisposing them to more severe disease.  The Town of Ayer would like to express its sincere sympathy to the family of the deceased during this difficult time.

The Board of Health is actively involved with investigating and providing the appropriate guidance to the family as well as to all individuals involved to insure that the protocols of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health are followed.

These protocols include an investigation into those individuals identified as “close contacts” of the deceased individual.  Anyone identified as a “close contact” has already been notified by the Board of Health and has been requested to self-quarantine for a period of fourteen days. Unless you have been contacted by the Board of Health, it is not likely that you have had exposure to this individual.

The Town of Ayer continues to monitor the spread of COVID-19 within the community and will take appropriate actions as directed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to mitigate the spread of the virus.  The Town is also advising residents to do your part and follow the CDC guidelines by staying home if you are sick, and continue practicing social distancing (staying at least 6 feet away from others when possible).

For questions regarding this matter, please contact Mr. Jim Garreffi at the Nashoba Boards of Health at 978-772-3335 x 305.
