Streetscape Master Plan - November 2014

Streetscape Master Plan for East Main Street, Main Street, and West Main Street

The Town is beginning the planning process for a  Streetscape Master Plan for the East Main Street, Main Street and West Main Street corridor, starting at the Route 2A Rotary  to Fort Devens at Macpherson Road. This plan will be used to guide and implement infrastructure improvements to these areas. The plan will examine potential  improvements including:

  • Gateway locations and treatments
  • Town Center character
  • Sidewalk treatments
  • Curb cuts
  • Crosswalk locations and treatments
  • Pedestrian circulation patterns and mobility improvements
  • Roadway cross sections
  • Bike lanes and access
  • Trees and landscaping
  • Site furnishings such as benches, trash receptacles, bike racks, sidewalks, crosswalks, etc.
  • Lighting styles and characteristics
  • Parking

Streetscape design elements and circulation improvements will take the following into consideration:

  • Creating a community sense of place
  • Creating a local design aesthetic that builds off of the existing community character
  • Cost and materials lifecycle
  • Traffic calming measures
  • Materials ease of maintenance
  • Utility coordination
  • Applicable state and local design and construction standards
  • Supporting stormwater designs, including Low Impact Development (LID) techniques

Pre-Planning Workshop and Presentation

A pre-planning workshop was recently held to get input from various town boards, committees, businesses and interested citizens. This workshop discussed issues and problems related to the corridor, possible solutions and concepts.

The presentation used during the workshop is available here: Streetscape Master Plan Study (2014)
