Materials Not Accepted at the Transfer Station

The following cannot be recycled at the Transfer Station:

  • Aerosol cans: accepted at Devens HHW (see below)
  • Antifreeze: accepted at Devens HHW (see below)
  • Construction/demolition debris (accepted at Republic Services at Devens 978-772-6500)
  • Oil-based paint: accepted at Devens HHW (see below)
  • Lithium batteries: accepted at Devens HHW (see below)
  • Mattresses / box springs / textiles (as of Nov 1, 2022) (see recycling options on Transfer Station page)
  • Plastic bags: most grocery stores will take these.
  • Styrofoam
  • Sharps/syringes: The Nashoba Associated Boards of Health accepts sharps. For more information, click here.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection: Ayer residents and small businesses have 20 opportunities per year to properly dispose of household hazardous waste, such as cleaners, pesticides, fertilizers, paint, auto fluids, etc. The Devens Regional Household Hazardous Products Collections Center is open March to December from 9AM to 1PM on the first Wednesday and following Saturday.
